[ She isn't sure if she should come here, if she would be welcome with the news she carries. But to do anything else feels like a disrespect, so she goes, hand lifting to rap at Evan's door. Evan speaks...English, yes? She'll try that. ]
Evan? Are you there?
[ She stands back, hand falling to her side. Her expression is drawn and tired, but hopeful. ]
[He doesn't get many visitors -- well, he hasn't let a lot of people know where his room is, introvert that he is, so it's with bright curiosity that he responds to the knock and call. It's lucky that she's caught him at home, as he's been running about today with a quickness, gathering new words like shiny rocks.
The door muffles the voice enough that he exclaims in delighted surprise when he sees who it is.]
[ This, she thinks, is how she wants to remember him: crackling with energy. He puts a smile on her face. ]
I speak all the languages of men. [ She says it breezily, the pauses, amends herself: ] All the languages of Earth. [ There's a nuance there, brought upon by their circumstances. ] I suppose they are all similar, to me.
[ She motions past her, to the hallway. Maybe it would be better they stepped out for this. ] Were you about to be away? We could walk together.
[He holds up a hand to stay her, turns and trots back to his desk to scoop up his notebook and writing kit and satchel. His desk is piled with books, little paperback language primers to big opaque-looking tomes, but it's only his coil-bound notes that he brings with him.
Her declaration of proficiency nets her a keen, surprised, even excited look from the young man as he steps out of the room and closes the door behind him.]
You do? You're practically a Rosetta stone, then, aren't you? [He beams.]
[ She laughs a bit, can't help a glance around the room. It's sparse but for the books, which she supposes suits him nicely. ] I do not know what that is.
[ She expects he'll tell her. He never really misses an opportunity to gush, which she finds endearing. ]
[He falls in beside her, in fact glad for the chance to elucidate on what in his opinion is an incredibly cool thing.]
The Rosetta Stone was a really key archeological find in my culture's history. It was this decree that'd been carved into a stele in three languages, thousands of years ago -- Greek, which is still well-understood, Egyptian hieroglyphics, which no one had any clue about, and... oh, what was the third one. Sumerian? Demotic? Anyways, something we had some translation for.
[He offers a sheepish shrug for his lapse of knowledge there.]
In any case, because it was the same thing written out three times, it became this kind of figurative codex for sorting out hieroglyphics in particular, which had been very opaque up until then. Pictographs, right? They look like they should parse, but they rely so much on cultural context. It was one of the most illuminating discoveries in archaeological history.
Anyways. [This time he flashes her a grin.] What it means is that you're probably going to have your hands full translating until they fix this little problem, aren't you?
[ Half-listening to his explanation, she watches the light filter in through the windows and catch in his red hair. She tries to burn the image into her memory.
He spares her the lead-in, which she appreciates. Her smile turns softer, sadder. ]
No, I will not. [ She reaches out, lifts a hand to watch how the skin between her fingers stretches out and lets light pass through, warms it pink and hot. There's so much she doesn't want to forget, like how the sun feels. ]
ALASTAIR has called me back to my world, Evan. I am needed by my people. [ Her hand drops again. ] I came to say good-bye.
[That catches him sideways, legitimately takes a moment to sink in. It stops him in his linguistic tracks, although confusion is his first bald-faced reaction.
Oh. Oh, no, but that's... that's the thing about being with ALASTAIR, isn't it, that's the thing that eventually happens. That's what most, if not all of the people here are hoping for, in the end. To be sent home. To be reunited with the worlds they've all been so unexpectedly torn from. He stares at her, and there's an effort made in him to perk up, to engage with that information like it's something she wants to have happen.]
That's... Kida, that's. [It's not great, he's going to miss her. He's surprised by the degree to which he realizes he's going to miss her.] That's really something. When... did you find out?

don't worry emojis are safe only old people use preinstalled emoticon bullshit, but emoji are always in you wouldn't believe how creative you can get in some languages
So I've been talking to Serene about her world, and apparently humans have a reputation there for banging anything with a mind and a sex drive. In the interests of scientific survey, is it the same out there in space? Are there a lot of Kirks?
no idea who kirk is buuuuut hard to say i mean lots of humans want to fuck lots of things, but it goes both ways you know? and some humans don't at all, so idk, there's your answer, hope that helps
On the contrary, I am devastated. Star Trek doesn't make it into the... what was it, 24rd century? Perhaps there are things about the future I don't want to know after all.
